Vegetarian and vegan Italian lunch and dinner at Fiena, King's Cross

Cheesy garlic bread being pulled apart on a wooden board at Fiena, King's Cross

Italian food has always been kind to vegetarians, and at Fiena, our family-run cafe, bar and restaurant at 4 Medway Court, Judd Street, London WC1H 9QX, that carries on well past breakfast. We've already written about our vegetarian and vegan breakfasts. This post is about the rest of the day: the main menu that runs from midday until close. Every dish is marked V (vegetarian), VG (vegan) or GF (gluten-free), so you can see at a glance what works for you. Nasipa put it simply: The menu has a nice variety, and every dish we tried was enjoyable. (Nasipa E., Google review)

Starters to share

  • Bruschetta (V, VG): marinated plum tomatoes with basil, oregano, garlic and olive oil.
  • Garlic bread (V, VG), or garlic bread with cheese (V).
  • Padron peppers (V, VG, GF): blistered Spanish green peppers with flaked sea salt.
  • Caprese (V, GF): buffalo mozzarella, heritage tomato and basil leaves.
  • Funghi al forno (V, GF): a baked flat mushroom with ricotta and spinach sauce and parmesan.
  • Arancini mushroom (V), served with saffron sauce.

The arancini have fans. One guest wrote: Arancini was yum, and my wife was glad that they served gluten free pizza bases. (lloydyoliver, Google review)

Pasta and risotto

Three pastas and a risotto on the menu are vegetarian:

  • Penne arrabbiata (V, VG): tomato sauce, chilli and garlic. It's the vegan pasta on the menu, and it has a kick.
  • Ravioli ricotta and spinach (V), cooked in a sage and butter sauce.
  • Spaghetti pesto (V): double cream, sundried tomatoes, zucchini and pesto.
  • Risotto mushrooms (V, GF): creamy Arborio risotto with mushroom, parmesan and butter.

Gluten-free penne is available for every pasta dish, so the arrabbiata or the pesto can be made gluten-free too.

Pizza without the meat

The Margherita (V) is tomato sauce, fior di latte and basil. The vegetarian pizza (V) adds mixed peppers, olives, onion and spinach, A gluten-free base is available, and mixed peppers are one of the pizza extras.

Salads and sides

The goat cheese salad (V, GF) is mixed leaves, walnuts, honey mustard sauce and roasted goat cheese. Most of the sides are vegan and gluten-free: rosemary potatoes, tenderstem broccoli, mixed salad, French beans, chips, and heritage tomato with red onion. Rocket and parmesan, sautéed mushrooms and zucchini fritte are vegetarian. A couple of sides with a pasta makes a proper meal.

A vegan dessert, too

The dessert menu has a vegan and gluten-free chocolate brownie, served warm with blood orange sorbet. All three sorbets (mango, blood orange and lemon) are vegan. The tiramisu, cheesecake, soufflé al cioccolato, profiteroles and gelato are all vegetarian.
