Tucked beside Battlebridge Basin on the Regent's Canal, the London Canal Museum at 12–13 New Wharf Road, London N1 9RT, is one of King's Cross's smaller and more unusual museums. If you're looking for somewhere to eat before or after a visit, Fiena, our family-run Italian cafe, bar and restaurant at 4 Medway Court, Judd Street, London WC1H 9QX, is about 1.1 km away on the other side of King's Cross, roughly a 15-minute walk.
A museum in an ice house
The museum, which opened in 1992, tells the story of London's canals, especially the Regent's Canal, alongside the story of the building itself. It's housed in a Victorian ice warehouse built in 1862–63 for Carlo Gatti, who imported ice from Norway by ship and canal barge. Two of the old ice wells survive under the building; one can be seen from the museum floor. Exhibitions cover canal engineering and locks, boats and cargoes, horse-drawn boats, the lives of canal workers and the painted "roses and castles" decoration of narrowboats.
Gatti was a Swiss-born businessman from the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino who came to England in 1847, and he is credited with first making ice cream available to the general public. Battlebridge Basin itself was dug in 1820, and its name comes from the old name for the King's Cross area, after an ancient bridge over the River Fleet. Before you go
- Opening times: the museum lists Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–16:30, with last entry at 16:00. It's closed on Mondays except bank holidays.
- Tickets: pay on arrival; there's no pre-booking except for boat trips and some events. The museum lists adult admission at £8, with concession, child and family tickets, and free entry for children aged 6 and under.
- Boat trips: the museum runs trips on the canal, which should be booked online in advance.
- December lates: the museum says it will open until 20:00 on every Tuesday in December 2026, with short boat trips to see the seasonal lights of King's Cross.
Check the museum's times and charges page before you set off.
The walk
From New Wharf Road, head along Wharfdale Road and Northdown Street to Caledonian Road, then south past King's Cross station and along Gray's Inn Road. Turn into Argyle Street and you'll come out on Judd Street, where you'll find us at Medway Court. The museum says most visitors spend one to two hours inside, so there's time for a meal either side.
Breakfast or lunch
We open at 08:00 every day and serve breakfast until 14:00, so a morning visit can start with Eggs Benedict, the Fiena English breakfast or Tiramisu French toast, plus a cappuccino or a flat white. See our breakfast menu. From midday our main menu runs through to close: starters such as arancini or garlic bread, pasta like spaghetti carbonara or Linguine Fiena, pizza, risotto, and grills and fish such as lamb cutlets or sea bass with capers.

Gatti's ice cream, and ours
After a museum about the ice trade, it would be a shame to skip dessert. Our dessert menu has gelato (vanilla, wild strawberry and salted caramel), sorbet (mango, blood orange and lemon), and an affogato: ice cream with a shot of espresso poured over. Our post on tiramisu, gelato and affogato has more.
More around King's Cross
The canal is just one side of King's Cross. Our guides to Granary Square and Coal Drops Yard and St Pancras have more ideas. Students and NHS staff get 10% off every day with valid ID; see our post on the NHS and student discount.
“Lovely staff, delicious food, perfect location for St Pancras. Loved it”
